How Cable TV Works

HOW TO USE YOUR CABLE SERVICE

Wave Broadband would like  to thank you for subscribing to our cable service. The following information is provided to help you and to answer any questions you may have about your cable service.

Cable television is great entertainment value. Cable offers many choices of programming entertainment including movies, sports, news and information, education, original programming, comedy, action, drama, special events and much more.

How Cable Television Works
Cable television brings you more channels and generally better reception than off-air reception of broadcast television since TV signals travel to your home through a combination of fiber optics and cable - rather than through the air.

Cable television brings television stations from your local area, across the country and around the world into your home through miles of high-technology fiber optics and cable, uninterrupted by trees, buildings and other surface obstacles.

Cable television lets you receive many additional channels from communications satellites.

  1. Individual television programs are produced in many locations around the world.
  2. These programs are transmitted to communications satellites that orbit the earth. These satellites stay in a fixed position 22,300 miles above the earth, allowing them to transmit to your community.
  3. Our local receiving dishes pick up these signals.
  4. The cable television "head-end" - the control center - processes these satellite signals - along with the signals from your local TV stations and other sources - so they can be transmitted over our cable system (consisting of state of the art fiber optics and coaxial cable) to your home.
  5. These quality television programs are brought to your home via hundreds of miles fiber optics and cable, either strung on the same poles that carry your telephone or electric service or buried underground.

We are committed to providing quality service.
Following are a few suggestions to help us meet this goal.

Installation
Someone over 18 years of age must be home during the installation of your cable television service. This will ensure a thorough and complete installation and will allow you to become more familiar with your cable service and equipment.

General Dos and Don'ts
We have installed cable in your home in a manner that is consistent with Federal Communication Commission ("FCC") rules. Here are a few tips to keep it operating safely and reliably:

  1. During severe electrical storms you should unplug your TV set and cable converter to avoid damage. Your cable company and set manufacturer are not responsible for damage that occurs due to acts of nature.
  2. Remember, your cable converter operates on 110 volts, so take all the precautions which you would for any small appliance - such as checking that the cord is not worn or damaged.
  3. For your own safety, do not attempt to open or otherwise tamper with your cable converter.
  4. If you have someone other than us install the inside wiring in your home, or if you do it yourself, ensure that it complies with applicable governmental regulations (such as the FCC signal leakage rules) and does not interfere with the normal operations of the cable system and other communications systems (such as radio used by the police and fire departments) and devices. You may obtain a copy of the applicable standards from our office.

Billing
Your monthly cable bill not only gives you a listing of your charges, payments and credits, but it may also contain special messages concerning rates, programming and other services. Take time to review your bill to make sure your name and address are correct. You generally will be billed at the same time each month.

Your first statement will include a monthly charge for the upcoming month. It may also include:

  1. Your installation charge.
  2. A partial charge for your first month's service if you are connected in the middle of a billing cycle. For example, if your monthly Basic Service cable fee was $41.95 and you connect to cable on the tenth day of a 30-day month, you would be billed for 2/3 of a month. The amount shown next to the line entry "prorate" or "partial month" would be $27.96.
  3. Please be sure to remember your payment due date.
  4. Please include any written requests in a separate letter to your cable company.
  5. All prices for services may be subject to applicable franchise fees and taxes.
  6. Please refer to material provided to you when you were installed and from time to time thereafter relating to billing and complaint procedures of your cable company, including the address and telephone number of the local franchise authority's cable office.
  7. View and pay your bill on-line at www.starstream.net. By receiving your bill on-line you will not receive a paper bill.

Please refer to the Payment for Service section of our Policies and Practices Notice for more information.

About Your Converter
Many television sets cannot receive the large number of channels offered by cable television, unless an electronic channel-selection device called a "converter" is used.

The converter is simply a tuner; it converts the cable channel selected by the customer to a low-numbered channel, typically 2 or 4. Tune your television set to the "output" channel of the converter (for example Ch 2). Programs may then be selected by tuning the converter to the desired channel. The converter sends the channel through to the television set on the output channel (for example Ch 3). Most cable-ready sets may not require a converter to receive the non-scrambled channels. Some television components, like VCRs, cable-ready sets and remote control televisions are not always compatible with your cable television service. We encourage you to make sure components you purchase are compatible with your cable television service. For further information, please refer to the Equipment Compatibility section of this notification, or call your local cable office.

We offer converters for lease and remote controls for purchase. Premium services are available with digital converters. A digital converter is necessary for Pay-Per-View services. The converter also provides the option to use "parental control" to block out channels.

To watch your television after installation of your cable service is easy. Just turn on your television set and the converter (if your converter model has an on/off switch). Make sure that your television is tuned to the output channel of your converter (Ch 2 or 4), then select the channel you want to watch by using the controls on either the converter or the handheld remote control device. To ensure reliable operation, make sure the converter is plugged into a "live" electrical outlet, not one that is controlled by a light switch. Loss of power to some converters may result in a temporary loss of cable service, even after the power is restored.

IF YOUR CONVERTER IS PROVIDED BY US AND IS OWNED BY US, YOU MUST RETURN IT WHEN YOU ARE NO LONGER A CUSTOMER. YOU MAY NOT MOVE YOUR CONVERTER TO ANOTHER LOCATION OR USE IT AT ANY TIME AT AN ADDRESS OTHER THAN THE LOCATION WHERE YOUR SERVICE WAS INSTALLED BY US WITHOUT THE PRIOR WRITTEN AUTHORIZATION OF YOUR CABLE COMPANY.

If You Have Problems
From time to time, you may experience a problem with your television picture that can easily be fixed. Trying to fix it yourself will save you time and may even save you money on television repair. Please refer to this list BEFORE you call your local cable office's customer service department.

IMPORTANT: Is your TV dial set on the converter output channel (example Ch 2 or 4)?

Rolling Picture:
Adjust "vertical hold" on your TV set.

Picture Leans to Side:
Try adjusting "horizontal hold" on TV set.

Wrong Channel:
Check TV dial and converter for channel setting.

Snow on Screen:
Check to make sure converter is plugged into a working outlet.

No Picture, No Sound:
Make sure TV set is plugged into "live" electrical outlet, and not controlled by a light switch.
Push red "reset" button on back of TV set, if your TV has one.
Adjust "brightness" control on TV set.

Picture Shrinks:
Overloaded circuit in your TV set.
Electric company power cutback.

No Picture:
Check channel setting on converter and TV set.
Check listing to make sure channel is broadcasting during this time slot.
Wait for TV station announcement of difficulty.
Check other channels to compare reception.

NOTE: A quick troubleshooting isolation procedure is to check reception on another television in your home connected to our service for comparison purposes.

Cable and Your VCR
If you are a VCR owner, you can use your VCR to receive additional enjoyment from your cable television service.

Your cable company wants to help you understand how to make your VCR and cable television service compatible entertainment components. With your cable and VCR combination, you can now record your favorite movies and cable programs for later viewing. We want you to have maximum flexibility in watching what you want, when you want to watch it.

VCR-Cable Hookups
1. Additional equipment - such as cable jumpers, signal splitters or A/B switches - may cause picture distortion if it does not meet our system's standards. Please call our technicians in our repair department before you purchase additional hookup equipment.
2. We recommend against cutting cable jumpers. An improperly cut cable may cause picture distortion.
3. All cable connections must be fitted "wrench tight" with the appropriate crimping tool.

Installing Your VCR
With your VCR, you can access a whole world of entertainment, record what you wish to see, and watch it at whatever time you find to be convenient. Installation of your VCR can be completed through a variety of different methods depending upon your viewing and recording requirements. We will hook up your VCR at the time of installation of our cable service. Please call the cable office if you have any questions. A separate service call charge to hook up your VCR will apply if your VCR is not connected upon installation of your cable service.
