Troubleshooting Wireless Connectivity Issues

Configuration Guide:

Troubleshooting Wireless Connectivity Issues

Much like any technology, wireless internet can have its hiccups. Reasons for lack of connectivity can be due to the following:

  1. 1) Signal To Low: As you move farther away from the SBG940 gateway you can run into the problem of low signal. This can be due to obstructions, distance, or building materials used. To improve signal quality, try moving closer to the SBG940 gateway modem or placing the SBG940 gateway modem to a centralized open location.
  2. 2) Interference: Interference can occur when using wireless devices. The wireless technology used by the SBG940 modem operates on the 2.4ghz broadcast spectrum. The 2.4Ghz spectrum is also used by most cordless phones. When installing the SBG940 unit, be sure that it is not located near a cordless phone base station.
  3. 3) Wireless Network Card: Check to ensure the Wireless network card is connected properly. Check the Windows device manager to ensure it is installed and working properly.
  4. 4) WEP Key: Check that the WEP key is correct (subscriber's account number). Try to re-type this key in using the previous instructions listed in this guide.
  5. 5) Cable Modem RESET button: Verify that the RESET button located on the back of the SBG940 cable modem has not been reset. If this button has been reset we must send a technician to re-program the SBG940 cable modem.
  6. 6) Firewalls: As part of your normal troubleshooting steps, ensure that there are no firewall applications installed that could potentially block your connection. Remove any firewalls for testing purposes. (The SBG940 cable modem has a built in hardware based firewall. If the subscriber would like to remove their existing software firewall the SBG940 will replace it without problems)
  7. 7) Check the lights on the front of the SBG940 modem. Ensure that the DS, US, and Online light are lit solid. If so, perform a power-cycle of the SBG940 modem to clear it's cache.
