IntroductionHTML BasicsGraphics in PhotoshopFTP on WindowsFTP on MacIntoshUsing Frontpage
| Welcome to the Starstream Online User Guide for MyHome website templates.
The guide is designed to give you the basics in getting you up and running.
If you want to make it more complex, then you will require html and graphic manipulation skills.
All the graphic originals are in PSD format, which is from Adobe Photoshop. However this file will open in most other graphic editing suites. The layers are named and all you need to do is with the type tool, change "Website title here" to what ever name you want. Put in a new image and you are away! This is fully explained in the Photoshop section.

Tip of the Day: Keep it simple! Until you master html, you will spend more time trying to make it work, rather than concentrating on good content. A clean simple well organized site with useful, relevant information will do you a lot better than trying to make things blink, flash, scroll or whatever! Keep your graphics smaller than larger, as it puts people off waiting for hugh files to download.
Good luck and good coding. |
HTML Basics |
| The way all sites are constructed today is with the use of tables. Any of you familiar with WORD or any such product will understand tables. These are used to keep the content well organized and give the site some structure. Below is a diagram of the 3 styles used for the template options. |
 |
| Each of the Content Tables can be altered to suit yourself. Add extra rows, or extra columns as you wish. I recommend keeping it simple to begin with. The more complex you get the harder it is to find where it is going wrong!
I also recommend not touching the shell of the site. If you want to... go ahead, Starstream will not replace it for you, so KEEP a COPY before starting. You can always replace it by over-writing it with the original and starting again. |
WYSIWYG
What is it you say? WYSIWYG stands for What you see is what you get.
This is applied to all html editors where you can build your website and not have to go near the code behind. These are used in very much the same way as Microsoft WORD.
* You will need to read the indivdual software manuals on how to operate them
Font Tips
The two main font types used are Arial and Verdana. Both are nice and both have their merits.
Arial is narrower and looks like this in font size=1 and like this in font size=2.
Verdana was designed as a web based font and looks like this in font size=1 and like this in font size=2. (It renders smaller better)
BE WARNED! There are a few other fonts available that will work on ALL machines (Comic Sans, Courier New) as they are standard fonts that come with all computers. If you try to use a fancy font you have on your machine and others do not, it will render as default type which is Times New Roman.
Spacing: Keep paragraphs short and to the point. It is easier to read. |
Colors
Today just about all machines can render all color selections, so keeping strictly to the 256 color pallette is not necessary.
Remember that on EVERY machine your website will look a little different, depending on the personal settings of the individual user. Otherwise follow your own heart and choose what colors you like! It is yours after all!
All html editors come with built in color pickers. Once you have chosen your colors be sure to save them so you can go back again. |
Images
This I will explain in the photoshop section in more detail.
Save all photos as a .jpg file. They generally look best and are a smaller file size.
Save all text files or line drawings as a .gif file. They look best and have the best file size. |
 |
Working with graphics in photoshop:
In this section I will explain the contents of the Working Files folder.
If you have Photoshop 6 or 7 this will be quite easy.
As .PSD (photoshop format files) will open in many other programs designed as graphic editing suites, and you have a working knowledge of those, then it will still be quite straigh forward.
For this exercise I am using template 1.

Footnote:
If you know graphics well then you can make your own files. All you will need to do is make sure you RE-SIZE the images in the html files, so they fit your new dimensions, otherwise they will look Strange!
And if you want to re-name them make sure this is changed also in the html files. |

Uploading your website via FTP on Windows platform: |
|
Now that you've signed up for your MyHome account, its time to upload your content. For uploading to your FTP site, Starstream recommends using WS-FTP LITE client software (example shown below). There are many freeware and shareware products that you can find. Starstream recommends going to Tucows.com for all your software needs.
Each FTP client works in a similar manner, so the example below will give you an insight for ALL others. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. |

Uploading Your Content Using Microsoft Frontpage: |
|
|
|
*For instructions on creating/editing content using Microsoft Frontpage,
consult the documentation provided with your software. |

|
Now you can work on it. Once done click SAVE !!!!!!. Otherwise all your work will be wasted.
How to insert an image
Note: Your new image will only show if it is uploaded to the server. The most common fault made is to try and insert it from file and go to your local machine. While you work it will show, but when you view it in the browser, it can no longer reference it from there.
*For positioning etc. you will need to consult Microsofts documentation provided with the software. |
